FLAMES: The Classic Love Game and How to Play It
Long before love calculators lived on phones, kids played FLAMES in the back of a notebook to find out whether two people were destined to be lovers, friends, or sworn enemies. It's simple, a little ridiculous, and weirdly satisfying. Here's exactly how to play, what the letters mean, and how the old paper game became the love calculators we use today.
What does FLAMES stand for?
FLAMES is an acronym for the six possible "outcomes" of a pairing:
- F โ Friends
- L โ Lovers
- A โ Affectionate
- M โ Marriage
- E โ Enemies
- S โ Siblings
How to play FLAMES, step by step
- Write both full names next to each other.
- Cross out every letter the two names share (one-for-one โ each match cancels one letter in each name).
- Count the letters that are left over across both names. Call that number N.
- Write the word FLAMES. Starting from F, count along the letters up to N; the letter you land on gets eliminated.
- Keep counting from the next remaining letter, removing one letter each round, until a single letter of FLAMES survives.
- That last letter is your result โ Friends, Lovers, Affectionate, Marriage, Enemies, or Siblings.
Example: if 5 letters are left over, you count FโLโAโMโE and remove E (Enemies); then continue counting around the remaining letters until only one stays.
Where did FLAMES come from?
FLAMES is folk math โ a playground tradition passed hand to hand for decades, especially popular across South Asia and then everywhere the internet reached. No one "invented" it; like hopscotch or MASH, it simply spread because it's fun and needs nothing but a pen. Its appeal is the same as a modern love calculator: a fixed little ritual that turns two names into a verdict you can laugh about.
FLAMES vs the modern love calculator
A love calculator is really just FLAMES with the counting automated and the output turned into a percentage instead of a category. Both take two names, apply a fixed rule, and always give the same answer for the same pair. If you'd rather skip the pen-and-paper counting, our Love Calculator does the math instantly โ and the Name Compatibility Test adds a numerology twist.
